UConn freshman phenom Andre Drummond — a potential No. 1 NBA draft pick — is playing as a walk-on this season.
“Why go walk-on? When Drummond committed to the Connecticut Huskieslate this summer, he created a scholarship crunch at the program, which had lost scholarships thanks to the NCAA committee on infractions’s decision in the Nate Miles recruitment scandal, as well as the Huskies’ substandard Academic Progress Rate. With Drummond joining so late in the calendar, there simply wasn’t room to add him without taking a scholarship away from someone else. That someone was redshirt freshmanMichael Bradley, who UConn said volunteered to give up his scholarship and become a walk-on himself.”

UCONN COACH REMAINS ON THE BENCH

stormingthefloor:

WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING?

brittanyjohnson:

UCONN COACH JIM CALHOUN IS STILL OUT WITH A BACK INJURY.

DUE TO SPINAL STENOSIS HE WILL MISS AT LEAST THREE MORE GAMES.

CALHOUN WILL MISS OUT ON TONIGHT’S GAME AGAINST DEPAUL, SATURDAY’S GAME AGAINST MARQUETTE AND MONDAY’S GAME AGAINST VILLANOVA.

THE HUSKIES ARE 15-9 AND 5-7 IN THE BIG EAST.

stormingthefloor:

“The peaks and valleys of this roller-coaster ride aren’t likely to cause UConn coach Jim Calhoun any real stress just yet. The pressure to repeat as national champs is tempered by memories of a team that went 9-9 in league play only to emerge unbeatable in March. The 69-year-old coach managed his callow team with surprising patience on the way to last season’s title, and he’s reaping the rewards of that top-notch teaching job today. Both just sophomores, steady Napier and electric Lamb form one of the best backcourts in the nation, and Alex Oriakhi, the team’s lone starting upperclassman, is in the perfect position to mentor Drummond going forward.”
